An important aspect, even the very starting point of a work of Art, is observation. The more one concentrates - the more one really looks at something - not just one time, but many times and over a period of time - the more one sees, discovers and understands what it is one observes AND one's own reaction and internalization of these observations and their meaning.
For these reasons Art has played an important role the world over in regards to contemplation and spirituality in all its forms, religious or otherwise.
The French Impressionist painter, Claude Monet, is noteworthy for his dedication to the observation of a single subject. To the left is a short flash movie of nine out of thirty paintings in a series he did of Rouen Cathedral between 1892-93. It is a glimpse of the power of observation and focus.
